Habitat

The project is an investigation into rosin as a binder combining carbon-negative biochar, derived from biogenic residues through pyrolysis, to develop a new thermoplastic material.

Forests are the context of one of the most complex ecosystems on earth. Over millions of years, plants, fungi, lichens, micro-organisms and animals have developed into a perfect biocoenosis that exists in mutual interaction and dependence. It is hard to imagine that the visible tree population of a forest represents only about half of the total biomass of these plants. The other half of the trees and shrubs live underground in root form. The building blocks of the forest mature cyclically, similar to natural resins, sticky tar or flexible fibres. This complex ecosystem, whose interactions we still do not fully understand, is the context of destruction and renewal, of rituals and traditions, of growth and decay, as well as of history and the future. The fragile yet robust future of the forest opens up spaces for new synergies between human and non-human actors.Since ancient times, the Mediterranean forests have provided people with a diverse habitat and numerous goods. Rosin was a precious resource in Portuguese culture - the ‘tear of the gods’ - and played a crucial role in global trade relations, cultural developments and the country's wealth.
Project development within the residency programme “Sustainability by Design (SBYD.SPACE)” initiated by Folkwang University of the Arts. The project was also supported by Prorresina, Produtos Resinosos LDA, Portugal.

Natural resins are amorphous, solid or highly viscous mixtures of complex, high-molecular substances, usually of plant origin. Natural resins are colloids (Greek kólla - glue and eidos - form, appearance) that form the liquid solvent turpentine in a mixture of various volatile compounds called terpenes and non-liquid solid compounds.

For centuries, natural resins were a precious resource in all cultures - the tears of the gods - were responsible for worldwide trade relations, cultural development and wealth. The human fascination for these malleable substances can be dated back centuries before Christ. They are closely associated with mythical tales, beliefs and rituals that cross all countries and cultures. These sunlight made materials filled the warehouses of early advanced civilizations in the form of small artfully shaped objects and trinkets. Where resins were traded, they also served as currency. Natural resins such as rosin, copal and shellac are among the oldest plastic moldable and thus renewable polymers used by humans. The Minoans, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans used resins to seal their wooden ships. They made wood and fabric hydrophobic and created a surface that prevented the development of bacteria and decay.

Resin tapping is a technique in which the bark of a pine tree is removed
from one third of its circumference, after which the resin that the
tree produces in that part can be harvested by means of incisions in its
outer layers. The resin can be harvested cyclical from May till October, without it
being a threat to the tree. When a tree has reached a trunk diameter of 20 cm, it can be tapped for a period of 20-30 years. A cut produces an average of 1 1⁄2 litres of resin per year. Today only a few small
production centres are still in existence, harvesting the resin with
traditional and artisanal techniques.

Within the ecosystems of the forest, resin tapping is a centuries-old socio-ecological practice characterised by the continuous interaction between human and non-human actors. Its continued existence depends on maintaining a delicate balance between resource extraction and ecological regeneration. Against the backdrop of accelerating climate change, resin tapping has gained renewed relevance. Whilst this practice had declined dramatically by the early 2000s and was largely kept alive by an ageing generation of practitioners, a growing number of younger resin collectors are returning to the forests in many rural regions.

These activities require extensive ecological knowledge of tree physiology, seasonal growth cycles and local climatic conditions. As the continuation of resin harvesting depends on the long-term health and regenerative capacity of forest ecosystems, resin collectors have a strong interest in their conservation and regard the forest as a dynamic, living ecosystem whose ecological integrity is fundamental to the sustainability of the practice itself. Their constant presence in the forest enables them to detect environmental changes at an early stage, including signs of tree diseases, pest infestations or emerging forest fires. In this respect, resin collectors contribute to ecological monitoring and the resilience of forest landscapes. This resurgence has brought the ecological and social significance of resin tapping back into focus, particularly in southern Europe, where increasingly frequent and severe heatwaves, as well as prolonged droughts, have exacerbated the occurrence and severity of forest fires.

In the region of Góis only one resin distillery remained. Amilcar Aleixo is now the third generation of his family to run the 100-year-old distillery Prorresina - Produto Resinosos, LDA in Chã de Alvares. The factory is relatively small, but nevertheless an architectural maze in several stages, built up according to the individual steps of the production process.

Rosin is made from the solid components of tree resin, which is obtained from the balsam of pines or spruces (conifers). It consists of approx. 70% resin, 20% turpentine and 10% water. After cleaning the raw pine resin, the mixture of turpentine oil and resin is distilled to separate the two substances. During this process, both the turpentine and the rosin condense. The rosin obtained in this way has a golden yellow colour. Traditionally, the rosin was heated in a large closed kettle with a condensation coil over an open fire, similar to a whisky distillery. After the turpentine and rosin are separated, the liquid rosin is poured into large metal vats, where it cools and hardens to an almost crystal clear colour.

The name rosin (also called colophony or Greek pitch / Latin: pix graeca) is derived from the name of the Lydian city of Colophon, which was an important trading centre for rosin in ancient times. Pine resin long characterised trade between Europe, Southwest Asia and North Africa during the Greco-Roman period. The Greeks and Romans used the resin from various regions of France and Italy. As early as the 1st century, Dioscorides provided detailed information on pine resin from northern Italy. In ancient Greece, clay amphorae were lined with the resin to seal the surface. The typical flavour of Greek retsina is still produced today by adding Aleppo pine resin. In the seventh century BC, the resin was used in war as a liquid fire, the so-called Greek fire. It protected objects and surfaces from decay, bonded materials and was a versatile raw material that played a central role in everyday life and crafts in many cultures. Due to its antiseptic properties, it was also used as a remedy for the treatment of wounds and respiratory diseases. Before oil-based chemicals made
it redundant, it was a widespread industry all over Europe, since the
pine resin could be used for plenty of applications after distillation,
from pharmaceutics to cosmetics, in tar, but also in pre-industrialised plastics in the 19th century and
paint. It used to be an important component of linoleum, based on a mixture of linseed oil, cork flour, sawdust and colophony rolled onto a layer of jute, that was largely replaced by the plastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Today, pine resin is used on a much smaller scale as a sustainable source for a variety of products used in different industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food additives and biofuels.

All living tissue is made up of (organic) carbon compounds. Carbon is one of the most essential elements of the biosphere. Together with oxygen and water, it forms the skeleton of all life. In biochar production, biogenic residues such as green waste, pomace or manure are pyrolysed in a low-oxygen environment. Pyrolysis means not burning the biomass, but slowly decomposing the organic molecules into the purest possible carbon at temperatures above 350 degrees and just below the combustion point in the partial absence of air. In this way, complete combustion is prevented and the carbon of the biomass can be stably bound in the resulting material for several hundred years and beyond, which prevents the carbon from being released into the atmosphere during the natural decomposition of the biomass. Pyrolysis can also be used in the utilisation of residual materials. For example, residues from biogas plants, press residues from sunflower, rapeseed or olive oil production and fermentation residues from bioethanol production can be utilised. The energy for combustion comes from the combustion process itself; there is even more energy available, which can be used for further utilisation such as drying, heating or the production of electricity.

The project focuses on the agency of the material itself, providing objects that enable new modes of co-existence and interactions with other species to promote a more sustainable and liveable future. The objects the material have become show the explored qualities in plasticity and crusty surfaces.
The material is condensed, but not unchangeable. The objects have tendencies that are inherent to living systems: the ability to change, to decay and to return to nature as nutrients. The objects have been made in a self-defined and so called break- and-remake process. Due to the materials properties, each object can be melted again and transformed once more into another shape.

	Bodies of Water

Berlin, the city of rivers and canals, forms together with the surrounding state of Brandenburg Europe’s largest network of inland waterways. But the condition of the water bodies is concerning and the relationship of Berliner’s to the region’s water bodies remains somewhat ambivalent.

Bodies of Water is a geohydrological investigation into Berlin’s regional groundwater systems, which provides almost 100% of the city’s drinking water. Reflecting on the flow of water that circulates in and out of human bodies, the project explores the complexities that lie beneath the city, providing artifacts that allow for a new perspective onto the impact of geology on human life. This project is realized by Johanna Schmeer & Studio Lapatsch|Unger and co-commissioned by STATE with the support of the RISE Cities Program of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt and the S+T+ARTS program of the European Union and supported by Prof. Dr. Irina Engelhardt from the hydrogeology department of the Technical University of Berlin.

Part of the project was a workshop at Tegeler See in northwest Berlin. The lake is considered as one of the inner-city waters with the greatest depth of visibility in Berlin. As an extension of the research, the workshop aimed to explore the local water body with different tools in a multi-sensory way and to exchange experiences.

The first part of the project interprets the data from 52 two-dimensional geological sections of the city into a three-dimensional model and translates it into a collection of glass vessels, conveying the three-dimensional shapes of Berlin’s groundwater reservoirs.

The second part gives an insight into the aquifers beneath the earth’s surface, focusing on the water-bearing permeable rock that filters particles and bacteria, and provides natural purification of groundwater. The project gathers specific rocks from the geological layers beneath the city and uses it to transform the mineral quality of other locations’ waters into that of Berlin’s, allowing one to access local water specificities through ingestion, sensing and tasting, and temporarily transpose into the local aquatic environment.

The cube is one of the most basic man-made volumes. It is something that we immediately understand as a space - a building block - with which more complex structures can be created. The cube is used to negotiate many questions that have preoccupied architecture and the work of engineers from Vitruvius to the constructivism of modernism: the question of the beginnings, of the first house and of the original hut of architecture. As with the four other Platonic solids, the side faces of the cube or hexahedron are regular polygons that are congruent with each other and characterised by the fact that many edges meet in each corner of the solid. This resembles the content tableau of the socially influential building projects of the award-winning architects and engineers, whose thematic diversity is designed in a groundbreaking way through clear structuring.

The award unit consists of a stainless steel frame, which is attached to the respective award-winning building, and a four-part sculpture, which is presented to the respective architecture or engineering studio.

The German Architecture and Civil Engineering Award was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction and the Federal Chamber of Architects and is handed over annually since 2022.

The space of possibilities for the award-winning projects can only be created through the cooperation of the building owners and the actors of both disciplines, the architects and civil engineers. After all, it takes the commitment and courage of the building owners to initiate and realise new and innovative building projects. In this way, the builders create frameworks. These frameworks are characterised by the fact that there are no standard solutions. In order to strengthen the significance and visibility of the award in public space, the design of the plaque stands out in contrast to its historical predecessors through its three-dimensionality and becomes a new symbol. From sunrise to sunset, the changing light and weather conditions are reflected in the polished surface of the plaque made of high polished stainless steel. It absorbs and reflects the surrounding and unfolds site-specifically like the award-winning architectural projects.

The four identical white elements made of a mineral composite material form the award object, which is handed over to the respective architectural or engineering office. Stacked on top of each other, inserted into each other and arranged in different formations, unique structures can be created that at the same time offer a consistent order. Each prize-winner thus receives a statuette that can be individually designed. The four elements of the prize object also stand symbolically as an award for a practice that is never made alone, but is always also a collective endeavour - encompassing a variety of knowledge, skills, actors or scales.

	The Baskets | As Cestas

The Baskets | As Cestas is an investigation into one of Portugal’s most multi-purposed tree species, the chestnut.

The Baskets is the result of an exploratory, non-verbal and collaborative design process with chestnut basket weavers Joaquim and Irene Venâncio, two of the last artisans of their kind from Famalicão da Serra in northern Portugal. A four-week experiment resulted in open objects that translate the character of their construction, the core of this craft itself. The objects appear simple, yet they illustrate the knowledge and practices of lifelong experience that still require skilled human hands.

Project development within the scope of the 4-weeks residency Supernatural Togetherness of Art(e)facts21 – Knowledge Biennial 2021 in Portugal.

For centuries, the native chestnut species Castanea sativa has been a versatile tree in Portuguese culture – the breadfruit tree has ecological, economic and cultural significance and is one of the most deeply rooted elements of material culture in north-central Portugal, especially in the Guarda area. Today, large chestnut stands are protected by law, and for several years now, chestnut stands have been protected on several levels. In the Guarda region of northern Portugal, chestnut tree stands are found in biologically diverse landscapes that provide basket makers with the ecological basis for their craft. In the fragile spaces of the forest, the craft reflects a centuries-old practice that is strongly influenced by the synergies between human and non-human actors and exists in a delicate balance between harvest and regeneration. Their care – periodic cutting, drying and storage – requires ecological knowledge of growth cycles and climatic conditions. The forest is thus not merely a source of raw materials for them, but a habitat for cultural interaction: it determines the rhythm, form and materiality of craft practice. The craft of Joaquim and Irene Venâncio is thus inscribed in the ecological metabolism of the place – it thrives on it and at the same time contributes to its care.

In the neighbouring communities of Guarda, the tradition of basket weaving dates back more than 400 years and seems to continue invisibly. Basket weaving is considered one of the most modest crafts, used for thousands of years to produce functional and cyclical objects that can be found in all areas of daily life. In contrast to the fine, handcrafted wicker baskets, the coarse and robust chestnut baskets have always been used to transport goods and food, in agriculture, for harvesting and gathering grapes and olives, in fishing and for some items of personal use. If they are damaged, they are returned to the basket maker, who repairs them by re-watering the material.

Viewed through the lens of bioregional design, the craft can be understood as an expression of the local nature of knowledge and materials. The materials, techniques and forms arise from what the landscape provides. Production takes place in very small, circular economies – the material grows, is used, rots or returns to the soil. This creates a symbiotic relationship between people, materials and the landscape, in which cultural identity and sustainable action are inextricably linked. The manufacturing process is characterised by a dialogue between hand and material – in the process of making, in the embodied experience through and not just with the material. The relationship can be experienced directly: the material guides the hand, offers resistance, demands adaptation. The elasticity, moisture and grain of the chestnut significantly determine the form and technique. In a natural cycle of matter, nothing but water and heat are added to the processed parts. All of them can return to the forest as nutrients.

	Forgotten Collection
2nd edition

“In telling the story of Shellac we may bridge the seas and the ages and seek those far-away-things which throw an interesting light on the many and varied uses of this material.”

The second edition of the Forgotten Collection explores the potentials for the use of shellac as a binder for the development of a new thermoplastic material, combining the natural polymer and bamboo charcoal (created through pyrolysis). By experimenting with compositions, manufacturing methods and moulds different processes were applied to create a variety of effects across the series of the biodegradable and sustainable material, that does not contain any toxic components.Exploring the entire process of the development and the associated history of the use of natural resins, the material unfolds a complex landscape of questions; about disappearance, its ability to decay and the cyclical relationship of human and non-human entities.1 Shellac, a story of yesterday, today and tomorrow by Elizabeth Brownell Crandall, Chicago, 1924

Natural resins such as amber, copal and shellac are among the oldest plastic moldable and thus renewable polymers used by man. Shellac is the only resin of animal origin, a natural resin secreted by the female Lac bug, found on trees in forests in India and Thailand. Apart from shellac all resins have in common that they are excretory products of plant metabolism. From 2000 BC shellac has been used and exported ever since.
Shellac is a bioadhesive polymer classified as a natural thermoplastic material that is chemically similar to synthetic polymers. There are few renewable materials that have more utility than shellac. It has been known as a surface coating for centuries, but many old applications of the material have been replaced by petrochemically produced materials.

The objects the material have become show the explored qualities in plasticity, crusty to high gloss surfaces, joining, finish and aesthetic depth. Various mixing ratios are used for processing the composite for the different applications of texture, the used moulds, etc. are the result of wide-ranging lab experiments, leading to the current opportunities without yet finding limits to further developments. The substance is condensed, but not unchangeable.

Due to their materiality, the artefacts have tendencies that are inherent to living systems: the ability to change and to return to the forest as nutrients.

The entire collection has been created in a self-defined and so called break- and-remake process. Due to the materials properties, each object can be melted again and transformed once more into another shape. In addition, it draws a new level into the sphere of use and production by creating real spaces for re-makes. Thus the reminiscent space becomes the room to be imagined. The resulting objects form a collection of archetypes of use that pay tribute to the qualities of the material while also reevaluating a role in the preservation and perpetuation of legacies from the past.

	Forgotten Collection
1st edition

The Forgotten Collection investigates what is long forgotten, to make you think deeply about the modern modalities of materiality, time, value, production and reproduction, to create a new ontological imagination.

The first edition of the Forgotten Collection is an archaeological record of radical alchemistic discovery, reinterpreting material narrations sunken to oblivion - lost in centuries of transformation and development. To provoke a re-evaluation of the passed material world the project explores birch pitch, the bio-based ancestor of all systematically generated plastics. Birch pitch is much more than a scientific analysis can describe. It is saturated in its cultural significance. It absorbs the richness of history and scent of epochs that have shaped our civilizations. As an agent of the past, the material raises questions; about its disappearance, to what exists and how we want to live.
The project was supported by the Support Association of the Natural Science Museum of Berlin.

Through the cleavage of chemical compounds, the first artificially synthesised biopolymer in human history has embedded itself in all cultures worldwide as a mark the beginning of the first civilizing processes. The oldest archaeological finds (around 120,000 B.C.) were found in Campitello, in the north of Italy. With its materialisation, which probably came about by coincidence, the first synthesising process in the history of mankind was carried out. Due to the many functions of this black, aromatic smelling matter, the first steps in human cultural development were only possible. The areas of application of birch pitch are very diverse, especially since the Neolithic period. The thermoplastic allowed the gluing of spear- heads and the sealing of the first clay vessels. In the Christian narrative of the Tower of Babel it is said that it was used as a binder for the mud brick layers. Early texts on pitch extraction come from Theophrastus (371-287 BC) and Pliny the Elder (c. 24-79 AD). Centuries later pitch was traditionally used to help caulk the seams of the first wooden sailing ships. The research is conducted in collaboration with researchers and experimental archaeologists, of the Support Association of the Natural Science Museums of Berlin, who are usually simulating pre-industrial manufacturing processes of pre-industrial materials. The birch pitch is produced by slow pyrolysis of birch bark with a self-made kiln. Pyrolysis descibes a thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperature (500 to 600° C), whereby the high temperatures force a bond break within large molecules under exclusion of oxygen (anaerobic) to prevent combustion of the raw organic material. Within this process, almost any organic material can be carbonised and tar can be extracted from it.
The mirror-like objects became the embodiment of one big gesture that merges the act of creation with the final result - capturing the moment when the object starts to exist. Playing with the perception of the observer the material regains its presence in the objects by reflecting the viewers own image, allowing the reminiscent space to become an imaginary.

	Teaching Design

The Teaching Design exhibition shows all the projects realised between 2014-2019 within the design teaching programme School of Design.

The exhibition Teaching Design is both a celebration of the programme, that we initiated in cooperation with the Heinz-Berggruen-Gymnasium in Berlin and an opportunity for the students to engage with a wider audience, inviting professionals and members of different institutions to engage with the projects on display. It reveals the potentials of the self-initiated teaching format School of Design, offers critiques on our traditional education system and engages with the topic how design can contribute. These topics were also addressed in a short symposium with experts from different schools, universities and cultural institutions to discuss cross-institutional cooperations and future format developments.
Curation, concept and design by Studio Lapatsch|Unger and Studio Martha Schwindling.

The title New Positions wasn’t only the project’s in 2019. It stands programmatically for the continuation and passing on of the teaching format, which was developed in 2014 by Studio Lapatsch|Unger in cooperation with Andreas Friedländer (head of the art department at Heinz-Berggruen-Gymnasium) and supervised and conceived anually. The position of the new design lecturers was taken over by the designers Martha Schwindling and Kimia Amir-Moazami.

	Qube

The award/object Qube, honors civilians, groups or institutions who are committed with regard to the needs of the members of the military and their relatives.

Qube is handed over annually since 2015 by the Federal Republic of Germany. The object is composed of three geometric complementary parts that not only influence each other, but rather can complement each other. The wooden base symbolizes society, the middle part that is made of Corian stands for the awardees and their engagement and the smallest part the brass cube represents the military.

Commissioned by the Federal Republic of Germany. Produced by Köster Möbelwerkstätten.

The object conveys more than the sole utilitarian purpose of a representative award, in that it critically questions the relationship between the military and society describing it as a changing, non-rigid set of relationships that must be shaped in public discourse. By arranging the parts freely, it gives the chance to place the brass cube wherever you think it belongs to and invites to think critically about the position of the military in a sophisticated and pluralistic society. Does the military stand rather on the edge or completely enclosed, in the center of society? Or is it just a luxury we afford ourselves as a society?

The Pure Gold project consists of two complementary parts: the physical and material exhibition with the local workshops and the virtual platform as a space for dialogue, discussion and the storage of knowledge gained by the workshops. A direct result of the workshops are Instructables, simple and non-verbal video instructions in stop-motion format that invite the spectator to imitate and gain a new perspective on waste materials. The workshops foster a community and a cross-cultural exchange of practitioners such as designers, activists, artists, artisans as well as non-profit organisations, to explore the social, economic and geopolitical aspects of discarded materials. Within the workshops the participants are guided to exchange, reinterpret and prototype regional practices and to extend their individual approaches on recycled waste steams in a creative process.

	Above the ground

Above the ground shows a series of material experiments of a six-weeks investigation at Cove Park in 2017 that explored sand-casting with aluminum.

In 2017 we were invited for the six-week International Design & Crafts recidency at
Cove Park in Scotland. Located on an outstanding rural site on Scotland's west coast, the project was driven by naive material experiments melting scrap aluminum from the Glasgow Sculpture Studios and the ship docks nearby the peninsula. Discarded bricks were used to improvise a smelting furnace on site. A ordinary hairdryer was used to raise the fire above the melting point of 660.3 °C.

The 6-weeks International Design & Craft Residency fellowship was initiated by Cove Park and supported by Creative Scotland in 2017.

Bauxite, particularly aluminum, has significantly changed the world of architecture and design, travel and even warfare. As demand for aluminum increases and its applications expand, discussions about its production and environmental impact are gaining momentum. How do the bauxite extraction and the industrial applications of aluminum contribute to the processes of world-making and world-breaking? In what ways has aluminum contributed to the human imagination of certain places as centers of modernity and others as peripheries of extraction?
